They have been overpowered by the Bush neocons who believe that cutting taxes to the ultra wealthy while cutting health care to poor children is the only way to eliminate the troublesome underclass. They have been overpowered by the industrial-banking-intelligence-petroleum-military complex that undermines America's abhorrence of mercenary armies by fighting an unpopular war with highly paid security companies. The Reagan-era conservatives have been hushed by the socially conservative Mega Church agenda.
I miss the good old days when the conservatives could actually reach bipartisan compromises on a number of issues. Those were the conservatives that I didn't mind listening to, having a dialogue with, and perhaps bridging our differences with our common goals of helping our nation to achieve social and moral justice towards all of its citizens ... not just the rich ones.
