I once heard this quote by G.K. Chesterton during a time in history when fantasy's were thought of as childish and mediocre, he said, "Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist. They tell children that dragons can be killed."
This is my theory: any story, no matter what kind, can be broken down into a simple theme of "Good versus Evil." You can launch off from that. Most writer's blocks come from not knowing what is Good and what is Evil, and if you decide which is which, you've got a story!

If you search in Internet you can see many short and long fairy tales. There are many sites. Generally fairies are good. Cindrella is also a fairy tale. Generally, in stories, fairies help good man or woman at the time of danger, difficulties, extreme poverty etc. To write a story, you must first read the stories of well experienced writers. Then only you will get an idea or your own idea.
