Yes the red colour of the diesel is just a dye added to show that it is exempt from tax and for use for commercial resons such as farm tractors. Just make sure its not old stuff that has been laying about someones farmyard and sold to you cheaply, nasty people sometimes sell old oil mixed with diesel and other nasties and claim its red diesel that they got cheap from a farm.

As all diesel is the same you can use red, yellow, green with purple dots. or any colour you want just dont take it on the road, your car WILL beconfiscated & crushed + you will have to pay a load of back duty and a hefty fine. even steaming your fuel tank out wont remove the dye. As for smell ! it all smells the same if 'normal' pump fuel . Bio-diesel smells different tho

I'm not any car wiz but my guess would be your going to have to at least start with getting the tanks emptied and the fuel lines emptied. Besides that I don't know, why did you go and try to use red diesel anyway, if you can't afford the cost of regular diesel then get a truck with a gasoline engine. Good luck getting your fleet back in working order.

It is coloured so that it can be detected by Customs and Excise. It is for Farmers and specifically authorised users as it is tax free. It also gives off a different smell so that it can be detected without actually looking onto the tank. The penalties for unauthorised use are severe as it is put into the same category as TAX dodging.

The law is quite specific regarding who is allowed to use Red Diesel and for what purpose.
It is not only the financial penalty you need to consider. The person who supplies it is liable not only to be prosecuted but could lose the right to purchase/use it.
You might save a few quid but it could cost them a lot more.

It's only a harmless dye added to the fuel to distinguish it from the taxed stuff.
