I want to make my mom a microwavable neck and shoulder wrap for christmas (not just the neck wrap) but I can't find a pattern. Does anyone know where I can find a pattern and is there anything I can fill it with besides rice?

I have one I dearly love. I bought it from a health catalog.
Its about 20" long and 5" wide. It's best to put a seam
"divider" at about 4" intervals
or the seed will all run to one
end. Leave this divider with an open space so seed can be balanced between each
section. Mine has flaxseed
and is not really packed tight.
Use a regular cotton cloth
that has a bright pattern.
this design can be used around the neck/arm/waist/
shoulder and back (when laying down.)

Just go to the site I've included get a rough idea of the size making a pattern on old newsprint...cut 2 (adding 1 inch all the way around for a seam) cut 2 of muslin without the 1 inch add...take the smaller two pieces of muslin and sew sew all the way around but the end, fill with beans, or whatever everyone suggests, sew shut. Take the larger 2 (I make mine with a good terry cloth or polar fleece, decorative style) sew it on 3 sides, I tuck in a bit of lavendar or mint...place the smaller one inside and hand stitch shut. That way you can remove the inside to launder the outside or change the scent. Great gift for anyone!

Rice, once dried, will not reheat unless you soak it in water. YOu can make your own pattern to fit her by using unbleached muslin, just lay it on her, and cut and snip, allowing seam allowances...easier than you think. Damp heat is usually more effective, so you could fill it with shredded sponge, soak and wring, then microwave...you will learn timing and power very quickly...IN the final version, use polyester Gabardine fabric after you have made the muslin pattern..poly doesn't rot with time. I've made these all you do is get fabric the length and width you want and fill them with rice(not instant)and sew it shut no pattern needed. microwave for a minute(depending on your microwave)

I have a large one for shoulders/neck, covered with corduroy and filled with buckwheat husks. Its particularly great for backs - I was recently "birthing partner" for my young sister-in-law, and I took it in my bag of tricks to the labour ward. She used that thing continuously for 27 hours, and said it was the only thing that gave her relief. Whoever came up with this idea deserves a medal.

Michaels store, any huge craft store or even check on google. There is materials and stuffing better than rice that will heat up nicely and stay heated longer. It may be cheaper AND MORE EFFECTIVE to purchase a premade variety, and it will last longer. Just a thought, maybe buy her one and make her something easier.

I don't know about a pattern, but my Mom has filled hers with oats before and it holds the heat and smells great.

They are just a tube. Here they are filled with lavender and flax seed. I have seen them made on Martha Stewat, so you mighttry her web site. www.marthastewart.com It was a while back though.

I agree Lady G. There is nothing GW doesn't know, almost scary. Just who is he really? lol
