I just had my basement refinished. We had the contractor put new drywall over existing plaster walls. I had him put holes in the wall for the wires and I want the speakers exactly across from each other. They weigh about 6 lbs. each. Can I just put the screws through the drywall and plaster without locating a stud for hanging?

Check out the self drilling dry wall anchors like those on this website. They are available at any hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart ,

Each size should state on the back how much they will hold. I have some holding up a couple of 50 pound mirrors in our bath room.

Drywall Speakers

There's a device available in the UK that has been advertised on television, but for the life of me I can't remember it's name or exactly what it is. It's a hook that fixes to the wall by adhesive, but when its time to remove it, you pull out the adhesive backing and, like blue-tac, there's no mark on the wall. I think the bigger ones could take heavy jackets, so would easily accommodate a light surround speaker. I thought it was a JMLdirect product, but it's not on their website, I've googled 'easy remove wall hook', 'easy remove fixing wall' and similar items, but no success. I know people who've used them for various things and swear by them, but also can't remember who they were. Best bet would be to try local hardware stores, unless someone else here has heard of these things and knows a source.

I would probably go with a molly or toggle bolt, either of which would handle 6 lbs, no sweat.

If they're not heavy, use expanding bolts in the sheetrock. Available at any hardware store.

Use the screws that come with the plastic anchors and you won't have a problem.
