My family is quick-witted, fairly intelligent, and not challenged by many board games... but we love board games and want to be challenged by them or entertained or both. Games that require a sense of humor or puzzle solving skills are a plus. And, we also like games surrounding pop culture. We have many board games and word games, but we're always on the lookout for more. (Examples of what's in our game closet: Apples to Apples, In Other Words, MadGab, Catchphrase, Cranium, Trivial Pursuit (in many forms), Pop5, etc.) Have one that you and your family and friends can't pass up? Have one that entertains you for hours? Have one that you "get" that others might not "get" because they require extra thinking? Please suggest your favorites - even if they aren't so new to the market or if they are difficult to find. Thanks, in advance, for your help. This information will be very useful for Christmas.

To clarify, "our family" consists of my parents (late 50s), my brother, sister-in-law and me (in 30s). So, all of us are adults.

If you really want a thorough answer to this question, go to www.boardgamegeek.com, create an account (free) and post it, pretty much just as you have, in the "Recommendations" forum (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/3/forum/1).

Since you've done a good job being thorough on what you're looking for, and what the ages are, etc., you're bound to get a lot of good answers. The website has a lot of very nice users that are so nuts about games that they just love giving people advice.

For your group I'd recommend Wits and Wagers (available at Target) and Wise and Otherwise.

Hi

I would think that everyone would like an easy and fun game so Do you have any games that came out during their time? Or I think that the classic milton Bradley games are great. Monopoly, LIFE, Scrabble, Scattagories, CLUE, I know ive seen alot of those tv games as well which can be found at your local walmart, Target, or toystore. I think that deal or no deal would be a fun and challenging game for everyone. BINGO is another great game if you wish you could give away small prizes like gift certificates to a coffee shop for first prize and second and third can get a box of candies or a gift certificate to a liquor store or a favorite restraunt. Even a mug with a few different teas would be nice cause its the holidays would be another good prize.

So it sounds like you would want a game that each person in your family can participate in and the game i am thinking of you really can't but it takes you in and won't let go very fun and hard to compare to anything else. the game is GO it is a japaness board game and is a ton of fun once you all know how to play then you could all play together in a game called RENGO which is go but with a 2 person team v.s. another 2 person team (you could make it 3v2 or what would work for your family.) there is no team work in that you can't talk about strategey you must play based solely on what your partner did. it is a lot of fun real check it out you can search " go board game" and a bunch of sites will show up also there is an online server too. http://www.gokgs.com Hope you will play and learn this very fun and smart game.

Lord of the Rings and Shadows over Camelot are 2 very good modern board games that are essentially cooperative, the players as a whole against the game, a combination of puzzle, resource management and cooperation. And great fun too! These require the extra thinking you mention but there are also many other similarly complex and strategic games available both online and in specialist games stores. You may need to hunt for your local on as your average toy shop will not have these games but its worth a look.

I would echo comments about cooperative games. Games such as Fury of Dracula, Shadows over Camelot and Arkham Horror are fun. Railroad Tycoon (if you can get a copy) is a good game. Struggle of Empires is an excellent game though a heavy game. Imperial is a good medium weight game based on investing in the European imperial powers of late 19th century.

Any of the above i would recommend as both challenging and fun. If i had to choose one for you - go for Struggle of Empires - alliance auction is fun.

If you want something lighter: Settlers of Catan, Medici or Antike.

Betrayal at House on the Hill

50+ scenarios... many of them are based off of or are like horror movie plots. When the "one bad guy vs the rest of the players" moment comes, there's some planning, as well as some thinking as u go activity for each side to win the scenario. For the good guys, there's alot of planning and teamwork on who should do what, who should give found items to other players who wuld make better use of it, and who should be sacrificed for the greater good. Diff game every time

Scene It (reuiqres DVD player and TV)
Has physical board game component, but questions and other aspects are done through DVD. The movie and tv editions are popular, but there are more specific categories like Disney and music.

Careers
is kinda old, but the it is interesting indeed. U choose your goals to achieve (how much $$, happiness, and fame) and go about earning all that. Not 100% realistic of course, but a good tie-in with actual careers ppl go through in life. To me, this is more of a "multi-dimensional" monopoly

Settlers of Catan
do get the 5-6 player extension as well, since main game is only 3-4 players, unless u do teams. There's definately thinking in this game.
-decide whether or not to trade, since when u trade, you're helping not just yourself, but also your opponenets. Also decide on what to trade and in what ratios
-decide on how to get your 10 pts.... luck and some controllable factors play into this.
-do this over that, or wait till later for that

My two current favorites are Blokus and Dread Pirate. Both are relatively simple to learn but take a lot of thinking to master. Blokus can be found at most Target stores and bookstore chains carry Dread Pirate. Though Dread Pirate is a bit more pricey, it is definitly worth the extra cash. The details put into this game are wonderful.

Definitely check out Beyond Balderdash, which requires bluffing and writing skills. You sound like you should all be "into" Scrabble also! I wish I could come around for Christmas. Nothing like board games after a huge turkey.

You didn't say what ages your family members are.

For a family that has kids of MANY ages, I would always recommend an old classic: "Go to the Head of the Class". Questions are chosen based on the education level of each player.

Just a nice way to include really young kids with adults.

The game "Puerto Rico" has won many awards. But I believe it is for three-five players only. Pure strategy.

It takes awhile to get used to the rules... But the people are saying once you understand them, you can't stop playing this game.

Take a look.
