This is a question out of curiosity. I am not going to use metal decorations. I know they are bad, so do not reply telling me I need to do my research before buying fish or screaming at me not to use them.

I was curious if anyone knows the details of why metal decorations are bad for fish tanks. I am guessing they would release toxic metal particles into the water, but I haven't been able to find an explanation on any websites.

Thanks!

Main things about "non aquarium" decor that are toxic to fish is the metals for one thing, and the other is the paint that is used, if any. Especially in salt water, these corrode away and release toxins into the water.

I suspect you will get a lot of varying answers for this one! The truth is, each fish has their own personality, and there is just no telling exactly how things will turn out. However, it is possible to have a sorority of female bettas, given all the right circumstances. If you want to try 3, you might want to set up 3 temporary bows to keep the girls in for a couple days (if you have a spot for them where they will stay warm enough). Then, add everyone to the tank at the same time. Re-arange the plants and decor so it's different then when the orig. betta was in there. That will give them a chance to explore and claim their territory all at the same time. You'll need to watch closely. Maybe they'll be super laid back and get along splendidly, but there's always a chance, with just 3 especially, they they won't be able to properly work out their pecking order and 1 may get bullied to death. I would google female betta sorority and find as much advice as you can, there are lots of different opinions and ways to go about this out there :) Most importantly, purchase the fish from a store that accepts returns, because if it's getting picked on and you can't set it up it's own 5 gal tank, it should be returned. Good luck! Having a betta sorority is awesome. If you want you can mix it up and get a veiltail, crowntail, and a halfmoon. Just gorgeous!
