I'm 63. I've enjoyed working these last few years once I got jobs I enjoyed and didn't have family responsibilities. I'm healthy except for arthritis. Recently quit my job due to unacceptable company policies. Now it's been a couple of months. I'm thinking about finding a full time job again rather than retire. What was the deciding point for you to finally stop working?

The deciding point for me WAS retiring and realized I hated it...I opened my own company in my home using computers and Internet...little did I know it would turn into a multimillion dollar business so quickly... I was very, very lucky..that I know. BUT in reality, I found that I do not ever want to retire...I want to work when I want to work, to take a day off when I want, and to go places for short times when I want...this job fills the bill, and actually, I love the work...I get to talk to people all day long from all over the world, and it is very rewarding to help so many with what they do. Perhaps it is time you sat down, revistied your dreams, and found a way to make them happen..who knows, stranger things have happened than have happened to me! Love and peace, Goldwing.

I think the decision to retire is a highly personal one. I
retired from my school job last June. I was an aide in the
local school system working with special needs kids. I miss the kids and the weekly paycheck, but there are other
advantages to retiring. One is more time to do stuff I really
want to. I do have a weekend job. Teaching knitting at
Michaels. I love it. Retiring from the school job was one
of the best decisions I have made. I simply got tired of the
routine and following the school system's schedule.

When my company offered "The Golden Handshake" for the first time. About 20 of us decided to retire because the retirement package was a good one. I also have lifetime discounts from the company.

I haven't discovered yet, I am 62, I work 30 hrs a week and just could not bear to be stuck at home all the time, and I have only been with my partner for 10 years! How sad is that? Mind you, I love my job, that could have something to do with it!

I knew it was time to retire when I fell onto the garage floor while taking the dogs pee-pee. Upon returning I don't know what I grabbed onto, but it sure wasn't the door knob. Thereafter, I had to have a bilateral subdermal hemotoma surgery and still after a year convalescing. The dogs sure are expensive. Yep, there's nothing like a forced retirement to boot. .

I decided at least 40 years ago that it was a good time to retire and get out of the proverbial rat race, last year I could afford to do it.

My body could not keep up with my mind! Seriously, I was disabled and it was cheaper for my company to put me on a Disability Pension than to keep me on their payroll with sky high medical insurance premiums to pay! Now as a retiree I pay the insurance, just like a normal retiree! Pretty good deal for me. After 46 years of it, I do not miss work at all.

this will be the strangest answer you will receive. the answer is " MY FATHER. my Father retired in February of the year in which he reached the age of 62. He was diagnosed with Waldenstraum's disease which is the reverse of leukemia. He died the following November without enjoying any of his retirement. before he died he told me, " Son, none of us know how long we are going to live. Please enjoy your life the best you can during your working years and if you live long enough to see retirement age retire as soon as possible and enjoy the time you have left. Remember I was unable to do so please enjoy it for me -- if possible, "

I never forgot his words and took his advise for once in my life and am glad I did because I have no regrets in retiring.

A tad younger than you, but still working with no intention of not working. I agree with you, if you're reasonably healthy and enjoy it why would you quit? Good luck with a new job if you decide to pursue it!

I will be working until I absolutely cannot physically do anything anymore. I have never been the type to sit still. Good thing too because I will not be able to afford to retire .
