I suggest a nicely bound copy of the classic Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. Amazon has a hardcover for $15.61 at http://www.amazon.com/Mere-Christianity-C-S-Lewis/dp/0060652888/ref=ed_oe_h

If you really wanted to spend a lot, but get a wonderfully bound copy, try Easton Press http://www.eastonpressbooks.com/leather/product.asp?code=0538 that has C.S. Lewis classics for $49.95 each. They are bound in leather. The books they have available are Mere Christianity, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, Surprised by Joy, A Grief Observed and The Four Loves. They can be bought separately, though you have to call them to order just one.

This is part of Amazon's description: "The late Lewis, Oxford professor, scholar, author, and Christian apologist, presents the listener with a case for orthodox Christianity. This is definitely not the shouting, stomping, sweating, spitting televangelist fare so often parodied; Lewis employs logical arguments that are eloquently expressed. He describes those doctrines that the four major denominations in Britain (Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic) would have in common, e.g., original sin, the transcendent Creator God, and the divinity of Jesus as well as his atonement and bodily resurrection."

I hope that helps.

I'd suggest East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It's a large novel, but it's not a difficult read. Steinbeck uses the parable of Cain and Abel as a template to tell the story of two generations of a family struggling to deal with the volatile forces of human nature. While not specifically about God, I think the book offers enough religious/philosophical insight to satisfy someone interested in religious debate.

If she likes to debate and isn't easily offended, she might like "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and "God Is Not Great" by Christopher Hitchens. They take an atheist worldview and address the dangers wrought by blind fundamentalism.

For something less controversial, Paulo Coehlo writes fiction with spiritual undertones. His books are very beautiful, moving, and not preachy. "The Alchemist" is his most famous work.

I just finished "Bel Canto" and "The Patron Saint of Liars," both by Ann Patchett. They are not deliberately religious, but do have strong messages encapsulated in beautiful prose and moving story lines.

some present day favorites: The Gargoyle with the aid of Andrew Davidson - outstanding first novel. Water for Elephants with the aid of Sara Gruen - Quirky and intensely stable! The dark Tower series with the aid of Stephen King (seven books) - my never favourite series (Horror, Sci-Fi, journey multi functional) the line with the aid of Cormac McCarthy (won the Pulitzer in 08 now a action picture) - yet super study besides :-)

The Da Vinci code. It's controversial but it's a good book.
