I don't usually crave chocolate, just had a period last week ( was half the amount & half the time as a usual period). Didn't have horrible cramps either, which is a new one. Cravings started AFTER my period...been a little irritable, and depressed lately too.

I am thinking that it might be a diet thing. I also started a new job that is physically demanding, after not working for about 6 months. I failed to mention that I am 25, married, 2 kids, and I have my tubes tied, so I think that pregnancy is out...

Craving chocolate
Some substances in chocolate are predicted to make us crave it. A substance called phenylethylamine is found in chocolate and seems to trigger feelings similar to “falling in love.” There is also a compound in chocolate called anadamide that stimulates brain receptors in a manner similar to that of other addictive substances. Chocolate cravings may also be triggered when the taste buds tingle with the taste of chocolate. This sensation occurs because chocolate's melting point is 97 degrees, just below body temperature. When the taste buds are excited, endorphins are released from the brain. These endorphins are the body's “feel good” chemical. There is also a link between hormonal fluctuations in women and chocolate cravings. Scientists cannot pinpoint what exactly causes us to crave chocolate, but many of these ideas propose that chocolate cravings are real.

Doesn't sound serious. Lots of things can upset your cycle. You don't say your age (if you were over 35 it could be pre-menopause and if you are under 21, cycle irregularities are pretty common). Have you begun or stopped dieting or have you increased or decrreased your physical activity lately like playing a sport? Are you taking birth control pills or changed prescriptions lately?

Even having a new roommate can affect your cycles -- studies have proven that when women live in the same house or spend a lot of time together their menstrual cycles naturally adjust to be in sync (which would put you out of whaack for a couple of months til you adjust to another woman's cycle).

Sometimes chocolate cravings indicate low magnesium in your system so you might try taking a multi-vitamin. Even seasonal changes can affect your hormones -- a lot of people go through a bit of low-grade depression this time of year, especially when we stop Daylight Savings Time and suddenly end up leaving school or work in the dark.

If you have this happen over the next couple of cycles you should ask your doctor about it but I would not sweat a one-time occurence.
