What has happened is the US military started late last Spring paying Sunni tribal militias fuel, cash and weapons if they would fight Al Qaeda. They did this in the Anbar Province which was 99 percent Sunni so it was not a big deal.

BUT since it worked, they decided to keep up with this in other mixed areas... which has resulted in the US military taking sides agains the Shia. This is why Iran has gotten involved... being mostly Shiite there.

My pt is what is winning... destroying an innocent nation, dividing the ppl then arming one side to kill the other... is that winning?
