"Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory (RAM)." ??? Whyyy? I DID save the file recently so I don't mind losing the little work that I did but HOW CAN I KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING? The file is pretty large but Photoshop is the only application that is currently opened. What can I do???

you can also work your file half the size your working it (50%) but save it with double resolution, that way when you want to open it again, you double it size (to the original one), but with a good resolution.. :)

Photoshop files are very memory hungry -You can collapse the file - It takes up a lot more memory when you have lots of layers open.
Do merge visible. Go through all your files and make some more space this way . Delete any you dont need and defrag your computer.

The first responder has, probably describe your situation, exactly. The more layers your image has, the larger the file size. In fact, each layer multiplies the original file size. If your background layer is 20 meg, a new layer will add another 20 megs. A third will and an addtional 20 megs, and so on.
This could explain why you were able to save it one time, but not the next.
The images mode may have, also been changed. A greyscale image is 16 times larger, in file size than a bitmapped one. RGB is a larger file and CMYK is even larger.

The file you are working on has a "bad null bit" at the end of the file ... open it in a (good) editor, like GIMP, and export back to the same, or new, name. GIMP will give you the "null bit"error message but forges on ... Adobe, like Microsoft, just enjoy being a pain in the a**. The file output of GIMP can now be opened in Ps ... .

Here's the problem with all the answers I've seen to this question. They assume the error is actually correct. I have 64Gig of RAM (I custom built my machine for incredably system intensive rendering) with only 12.9Gig being used, that leaves 51Gig of RAM to open a 324 MB file. So RAM is NOT the only cause for this problem. I've opened files 100 times the size of the one I'm trying to open but regardless I still get this error message. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

The same thing happened to me , then I tried to save the file for web and photoshop crashed.
Next time I opened photoshop it automatically recovered my files and saved them normally

In Photoshop preferences increase the amount of RAM that you allow it to use, if you have an external hard drive that is largely empty select that for your scratch disk. Regularly defragmenting your hard disk will also improve the general performance of your computer.
Changing the resolution is not a workable idea, since having reduced it increasing it will not improve the quality of the file merely make it larger with slightly blurry pixels.

i am facing same problem. i have 4gb ram and intel dual core process with graphic card but still showing same error when i open a particular png file.
