It would have been nice if you mentioned the age of the fridge, but, it sounds as if you have a bad compressor and/or a loose connection (a refrigerator vibrates constantly, and it is not unusual for wires to loosen). Thus, when you hit it, the wires reconnect, momentarily.
If you are technically inclined, then a loose wire should be easy to fix. If not, then don't do anything that might get you electrocuted!
If the unit is still under warranty, get it repaired for free by contacting the toll-free number on the side of the unit (of course, this assumes that you are in a country which has such warranties), or contact the appliance store you bought it from for assistance.
If the unit is less than ten years old, but out of warranty, then get it repaired (warning: it will cost about $50-100 just to have someone look at it!!!).
If the unit is more than ten years old, then buy a new one.

Un plug it and pull it away from the wall and remove the bottom cover over the compressor and the front grill on front bottom.Clean all the crap and dust bunnies with a long brush and vac. It could be running hot. Also defrost it even if it is a frost free. Some may have a cover inside the freezer with ice in it to prevent the thermostat from working . It will do wonders to your electric bill as well.
