I have an 87 Honda Accord LX Sedan. The carburetor was rebuilt in April 2005. This summer, we started having the same problems with it that we had then. Our mechanic acknowledged that we're having carb problems, but won't check the carburetor, saying the problems may be from an ignition switch. He said he replaced the switch. The car is still running the same as before he "replaced the switch".

Country Boy, When you 1st start the car, the gauge will show that the engine has warmed up, but you have to hold your foot on the gas pedal for 10-15 minutes otherwise, the car will shut off. But, once it stops doing that and keeps running and you drive off, it will hesitate when you come to a stop (of have to slow donw in traffic) and attempt to drive off again. Also, if you make more than 5-6 "stops and starts", it starts idling real crazy and then it just shuts off-wherever you are. Then, we have to let it sit 10 minutes or so, after which it will start up again. We were told to try Motor Up (or similar) at the next oil change. What do you think?

If any carburetor has been overhauled by a specialist it should last 75,000 - 100,000 miles. The only conserns would be the needle and seat, the condition of the float and the condition of the accelerator pump.

Not knowing exactly what the carb. looks like it's still a carb issue. If you're absolutely sure that the electronic ignition is working properly (have it checked at a Honda dealer) their computer hooked to your on board system would definitely pick up a fuel issue. It could be the idle or high speed circuit or the float Laval may not be correct. It may have an incorrect sized fuel inlet (seat) at the needle which controls the float position.

Does your motor feel as if its shutting off the ignition or does it run but stumble at the same time? If the motor feel as if the ignition has been turned off momentarily that points to a lean condition. Possibly poor fuel pump pressure carb. inlet seat is too small or the float is too low. Also the idle circuit may have an obstruction or the accelerator pump shot is week.

If the motor all of a sudden runs roughly ( keeps on running) The needle and seat may not be controlling the fuel coming in the float bowl, or the float is set too high. If indeed the float level is too high all other circuits will not function properly.

In either situation its very important to carefully inspect and feel the weight of the float. If it contains gas or feels heavy toss it and get a new on from Honda.

If everything was rebuilt in the carburetor correctly it should last as long as it did from the factory. Often there are parts in the carb that start to wear out though so they are more "touchy" after the first rebuild. I rebuilt a Toyota carb one time that was really corroded inside in the part that adjusts for temperature. I could only clean it so good...it never quite worked perfect but was better than before the rebuild.

If he starts to replace other parts that don't have any effect on the problem then you shouldn't have to pay labor on the work and may be able to get a discount on the parts. You will end up paying some labor for troubleshooting though.

It should last the life of the car. Carburetor are finnicky little pieces, easy to screw up. Methinks the problem lies with the rebuild job.

If it's rebuilt well, I don't see any reason it wouldn't last about 20 years. Do you? I've got some that are even older (like 30) that work extremely well.
