perhaps you could make it very personal, write about yourself and your peer group, or else someone who has moved on and left your group
to me the main theme of the story is that we get use to what we know, what we live, its scary and difficult to leave this security, no matter how negative, we adjust to the new, then its scary to return to the old even if the goal is to rescue others, often the others will not accept our insights and new knowledge

In the opening of the Republic, Socrates and a number of others are coming back from a celebration which took place down in the Piraeus (sorry if the spelling is off, this is from memory). They find themselves 'climbing out' of the Piraeus which Socrates views as a wretched little place. It was actually the port for Athens, I think, and there was a long walled road which led from the main city down to the water.

Anyways, so Socrates, like the learner in the cave, is crawling out of this place where only shadow and shapes can be seen. Then he bumps in to his friends and they start talking about philosophical issues, etc. The friends invite Socrates and Co. back to the house to keep talking, just as Socrates says that we must go back in to the cave after we are enlightened in order to help those still in the cave.

They go back to the house and the discussion begins. People move in and out of the scene in the house, but Socrates never follows them out of the room. He stays with those still trapped 'in the cave' trying to guide them towards knowledge.
