have you seen "bill and ted's excellent adventure"? they do it there, it ends up the winner is the one who completes the most ridiculous set of past modifications. They can't really alter anything anyway. Because they are from a future that caused them to exist the way they are they can't truly make anything different from what it would have been. Unless you're going with multiple realities/planes and timelines. In which case you could point out that no matter what they think they're doing their home is just as messed up as when they left it. I suggest watching the movie "the time machine" it isn't all that great but it covers this.
