volcano's and golbalwarming and global cooling...what where to happen if these extinct volcano's where to erupt again ( im saying this because volcano's produce sulfur dioxide and reflect the suns rays cooling down the planet) if u look thur time nothing has erupted if a while...last one that happened was the little krakatoa... and thats it 400 hears ago there was a massive cooling when a volcano erupted and also one in 1910 so if this happenes again or WE cause it to happen will this be a solution to stop global warming? yes i do realize that we need to stop with emissions but to get everything under control with this be a way

well, extinct volcanoes will not erupt again because their source has been taken from them and they eventually get eroded and leave behind the volcanic neck which was once the conduit. if an astronomically large volcano was to erupt (like Yellowstone national park) there would be major damage throughout the globe. as there would be ash and aerosols in the atmosphere, they can circle the globe for years on end, because it contains sulfur dioxide which blocks out the sunlight, however, carbon dioxide from the volcanic eruption in turn circles the atmosphere, and when eventually the sulfur dioxide disappears, the earth would go through a very large phase of global warming, which would affect the planet by melting the poles, which causes sea levels to rise, and any land that is below sea level are in serious danger of flooding. (all of this will happen in the future maybe the next thousand years no body knows because volcanoes are unpredictable). Humans aren't making it better either as we are polluting the atmosphere with carbon dioxide by burning fossil fuels. the only solution is to cut the amount of fossil fuels, and use small amounts or use solar power panels insted of other sources.but volcanic eruptions cannot be helped unfortunately.

Global warming and global cooling have been a constant throughout Earth's history. Yes, we are currently going into a warming stage, but it is normal (however, human activity HAS increased the onset of the warming). If we ever did become a warm planet again, which we will, the earth would eventually cool off again - and your idea of a volcanic eruption would definitely be one way to do so. You are correct on the fact that the sunlight would be blocked and we would go into a cooling stage. There are also other ways for the Earth to cool back off again. After people are wiped out, the Earth will have a chance to go back into equilibrium, and it will correct itself over time. I don't think it will be a solution to global warming, but merely just the normal function of the earth. If a volcano were to erupt now and it was a big enough eruption, then yes, I do think that it would cool down the Earth and prevent it from global warming - for only a few years - but it would also kill everything because there would be no light to grown food and feed people and animals. I hope this answers what you are looking for!

The eruption of Pinitubo in 1993(?) caused noticible short-term cooling. Lasted about a year.

THERE IS ABOUT AS MUCH CHANCE OF GETTING VOLCANOES TO ERUPT ON CUE AS THERE IS IN GETTING PEOPLE TO STOP USING FOSSIL FUELS. ZERO.
