If you do not want a contract, you can change your plan to any non-promotional, open plan. In fact, you can change your plan yourself on your My T-Mobile.com online account. When you do it that way, the new plan starts on the first day of the next billing cycle rather than the day you choose it. (This is consistant with the contract terms about plan changes also, even though when you call customer care to change a plan, they can make it retroactive to the start of the billing cycle so you get the immediate benefit of the change rather than waiting.) So, for example if your bill cycle ends Nov 25, then the new plan starts Nov 26 when you change your plan over the My T-Mobile site. Also I think your account has to be current on payments to make that change as well.
That being said, it IS up to you to make sure you READ CAREFULLY to make sure the plan you choose is NOT a promotional plan.
Contracts are required only when you are upgrading equipment (as T-Mobile is subsidizing the actual cost of the phone by providing discounts off the price so want a return for their investment) OR when you are choosing a promotional rate plan that has extra minutes or other features like unlimited texting for a reduced price.

Switch to Helio! I have an Ocean and it's awsome. The plan is $10 more than what I paid when I was with T-Mobile but I didnt get unlimited everything else. If you actually use all the features it's a great service provider. I use around 1500 text messages a month, the MySpace app is really handy since I'm not home enough to check it and I dont get lost anymore with google maps. The camera is pretty decent for a phone plus it has zoom and flash. The service coverage is good. Buddy Beacon saved me when I was stranded in Burbank with an almost dead battery. Download OperaMini though, it makes web browsing much easier. http://www.heliocity.net/

That is precisely why I switched to AT&T. I had been a loyal customer since 2004 and have always paid my bill on time. I had problems with my phone and wanted to exchange for a new device. They would not allow me without extending my contract.
This is a very underhanded way of doing business in my opinion. Ciao T-Mobile.

I believe it would be another 18 month upgrade direct in retailers. However Id speak to them over the phone and see what they offer you as an existing customer
