to directly answer your question... desaltation is bad because the density of the ocean water will change (the desaltation will be variable - different in different locations). If the density of the ocean water changes, places where the water sinks to the bottom will change, and thus the currents will change. If the currents change, changes will occur to land areas that are directly affected by the temperature of the air/water brought in by the currents. And thus, agriculture of each area will be affected.

Desaltation can stop the Atlanitc conveyor, an ocean current which runs up the east coast of the U.S, also know as the thermohaline current. Look it up in Wikipedia for more detail. If the Conveyor shuts down, the mean temperature of the East coast will drop by a few degrees and possibly cause lots of problems.

The change in osmotic balance in the biochemistry of various fish and sea life is likely to threaten their survival. But the greater threat is in polar ice melting. This will affect planetary albedo which will significantly affect the temperature of the planet. And also, polar ice melting and temperature change will shut down the thermohaline Global Conveyor current; temperature, climate, and growing season in northern Europe would then be significantly messed up.

Well you see all those creatures in the ocean?
They evolved to live in salt water. A lot of them can only tolerate small changes in salinity. For the ocean to dilute too much, those creatures could not live.

Deep water currents are altered resulting in global climate changes. Not a good thing.
