became. You dont use the word "became" with "have". You say "have become". But in your sentence, the correct one to use is "became". To use "have become", the sentence should go like this: "Hamburgers have become a favorite in America since the early part of the 20th century."

If that is the statement itself.. then its "have become"

If there is a reason after the statement...then its became.
i.e Hamburgers became a favourite in America in the early part of the 20th century due to an increase....blah blah

Hope its useful

It would be became as it is past tense, long ago.

For example, you would say "have become" if something happend recently e.g. they have become millionairres after winning the lottery last night

"Became" would be "they became millionairres last year".

Although this is the best way to phrase it, you could still use either and make sense, but I believe they way explained above is the "correct" method.

It's "became". You can't say "have became", it's "have become" but you can't use "have become" with a past time phrase like that (if you have a past time, you need "since" that time).

You just need "became." I don't think "have became" is proper English. It's "have become." But you don't need that, just "became."

I think that "became" is the proper word. It sounds good in your sentance, and you don't need to add "have" before it.
