1. Water and other fluids.
You can't flush a cold out of your system, but drinking plenty of liquids can help. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen congestion and prevents dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which make dehydration worse.
2. Salt water.
A saltwater gargle — 1/2 teaspoon salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water — can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat.
3. Saline nasal sprays.
Over-the-counter saline nasal sprays combat stuffiness and congestion. Unlike nasal decongestants, saline sprays don't lead to a rebound effect — a worsening of symptoms when the medication is discontinued — and most are safe and nonirritating, even for children.
4. Chicken soup.
Generations of parents have spooned chicken soup into their sick children. Now scientists have put chicken soup to the test, discovering that it does seem to help relieve cold and flu symptoms in two ways. First, it acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils — immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining. Researchers at the University of Nebraska compared homemade chicken soup with canned versions and found that many, though not all, canned chicken soups worked just as well as soups made from scratch.
5. Over-the-counter cold medications.
Nonprescription decongestants and pain relievers offer some symptom relief, but they won't prevent a cold or shorten its duration, and most have some side effects. If used for more than a few days, they can actually make symptoms worse. Keep in mind that acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) can cause serious liver damage or liver failure if taken in high doses. It's common for people to take Tylenol in addition to flu medications that also contain acetaminophen, which can lead to drug overdoses. Read the labels of any cold medication carefully to make sure you're not overdosing.
6. Humidity.
Cold viruses thrive in dry conditions — another reason why colds are more common in winter. Parched air also dries the mucous membranes, causing a stuffy nose and scratchy throat. A humidifier can add moisture to your home, but it can also add mold, fungi and bacteria if not cleaned properly. Change the water in your humidifier daily, and clean the unit at least once every three days.

Good old fashioned sleep, coupled with the lemsip.
I usually have a lovely hot bath, have the lemsip and go to bed,,You may feel a bit rough for a couple of days but if you do those things it will help you feel a bit better.
Taking lots of cold medicines works if you want to function properly at work, but I found I was worse when I got home for taking them.
Try the sleep and pamper option,do you need an excuse for that?,lol.
Hope you get well soon.

A pint of very cold water followed five minutes after you next go for a wee by a large whiskey which has been heated in a pan, add two teaspoons of sugar and top up to a half pint with hot (previously boiled) water. Dive under the bed clothes and keep your head down for 7 - 8 hours - you should sweat it out. Please disregard all of this if you are a diabetic or a minor or both. Hope you feel better soon.

Lots of fluids and sleep. Try drinking squash made with boiling water if you aren't a big tea/coffee drinker - it has the same soothing / comforting feeling as lemsip but you can drink as much of it as you want and as often as you want.
Stay wrapped up warm and eat fruit and veg for vitamin C.
Apart from that you just have to let it run its course - but if you do too much it will end up lingering for longer so take it easy.
Get well soon :o)

Airborne works really well that and Dom B&B mixed with warm water. The Dom will help the symptoms and the airborne will boost your immune system. If you take the airborne as your are coming down with the cold you won't even get it. If you take it after you get the cold it will be gone by the second day. Oh vitamin C and Zinc pills or lozanges work really well to. I hate colds so I start taking vitamins and airborne any time I feel one coming and it works to keep them away.

It will go away in its own time. You are already doing what you can. Also try drinking plenty of fluids. eat what you fancy. Sleep helps sometimes. Keep warm. Go for a walk when you are on the mend. Try to keep interested in something. Good luck.

I usually dose up on vitamin C. If I have a runny nose I pop 1gram vitamin C and that usually dries up my nose and I pop another when my nose starts running again.
Honey, glycerine, lemon, hot water and whisky helps sore throats and is good at bedtime.

The best is the two aspirin cure. You take one aspirin and place it on the foot board of your bed and drink whiskey until you see two aspirins. It still takes 7-10days..
