People automatically think that something written down or broadcast carries some authority.
We need to cultivate some critical faculties, to compare different sources, for instance.

Who says that they do? Most "western" countries (The US, UK and Western Europe) have multiple media sources which often conflict. It is a part of western culture to have many views which conflict;individuality and opinion are highly prized culturally in the west.

Depends which media you mean - if it is TV news they have a legal requirement to present unbiased and truthful news reports and are monitored by broadcasting authorities. Obviously they are not perfect, but generally you can trust them.

If it is newspapers, they do not have the same legal requirements or monitoring. They can say more or less what they like. They need to be in touch with the views of their readers to stay in business, and they can be sued for libel if they go too far.

Intellectual laziness, mostly. Those of us who have learned more than one Western language have the advantage of being able to get our info from more than one source. I personally speak French, Spanish and English, so I can watch or read news from other countries from their own perspective. That way I can compare and decide what I myself think, not what some newscaster "celebrity" (strewth) tells me to think.

Those who believe what they see on the local news just don't look around them at the rest of the world. It's certainly easier and more comfortable, but not necessarily the best idea.

Because God forbid them to think for themselves!
This is a great question! I don't know why Americans feel the news media is always right and never bias. Good God don't watch Fox! They are as bais as it gets.

its what we know. same as eastern people believing their media.
Also, are you talking about press? Media is a broad term. This includes things like MTV cribs and Reality TV.
I dont believe in either.
So your question is flawed. I am a person (in the west)

Because there are a lot of idiots out there who have either forgotten to think for themselves, or never knew how in the first place. Especially the younger people.....if they see it on TV it must be true. Morons. No one seems to have their own mind anymore. And the loudmouth liberals completely take advantage of that. They love it.

Because people do not do research about any topic anymore. They just drink the kool aid.

Because it is, at least somewhat, self correcting.

That is, if one media starts lying, others will turn THAT into a story.

Media that is directed by a single source, such as a government, doesn't do that.

Because it is much easier to believe everything you are told than to actually do any research and think for yourself.
