Yes there still are outright grants. Usually these are administered through the city or the county. Sometimes, to qualify, you must be willing to purchase a home in a depressed area. Some grants are conditional. For instance you might receive a small loan to help with down-payment or closing costs that will then be "forgiven" and become a grant if you stay in the house for a long time. I have heard 10 years in one jurisdiction. There are special programs to keep teachers in school districts and peace officers in high crime areas (cop on the block grants). Go to you city or county's official web site and look for "buyer assistance", "first time buyer", and "housing assistance" topics.

I certainly wouldn't be looking for a grant anywhere. Peope say they are out there, but in years of doign real estate, I have yet to see one. You can get a loan, but be prepared to put 20% of the purchase price down on the home you are looking at. You may need money in reserves to pay additional closing costs, or just for things you do once you purchase a home, like fixing it up, redecorating and purchasing additional furniture.
