That is a really good question. I think it has to do with the personality differences between men and women, cats and dogs.
I tend to say that an easy way to tell if a man is good around most women is by seeing how he acts around cats.
Cats and women are a lot alike. We do as we please, only will obey when it coincides with what we were already planning on doing, only want attention when we want it and will ignore you otherwise, are independent, don't like to be messed with, we can be prissy at times, we hold grudges, are loyal and loving ONLY if you treat us well, and if someone tries to tell us to do otherwise, we shoot them a look that quite clearly tells them to go screw themselves and then we go back to whatever we were doing before they so rudely interrupted.
A lot of guys prefer dogs; who are considered a much more 'masculine' pet, are generally much easier to control, loyal no matter what, always happy to see you, if there is a burglar in the house, the dog will go after them rather than a cat, who will assess the situation, think "whatever", and go back to what they were doing, if you hurt them, they forgive you no questions asked, are much more sporty and outdoorsy than cats, and if you tell a dog to do something, they usually do it right when you want it done.
So in conclusion; it basically depends on the guys individual temperament, what he wants to deal with, his likes, dislikes, and if he would rather have a pet or a roommate. Because while you can live with cats, you can never truly own one.
Personally, I wouldn’t date a guy unless he loved both dogs AND cats. That way I had a pretty good idea that in general; he’d be far more able to roll with the punches than people who just like one or the other of them.
Anyway, while that rule certainly doesn't work for everyone; that just my experience from my observing both male and female cat and dog lovers.
Good luck; I hope that helps!

They're both good in their way, but dogs are too dependent. You need to do everything for them. Cats, on the other hand, are independent enough that you can just let them outside in the morning and they can take care of themselves. Even if they're hungry they can just go out in the field and catch something fresh to eat. Plus in the winter when they mostly stay indoors, they can curl up on your lap and keep you warm (try doing that with a St. Bernard; it's just not going to work). Plus, cats have very unique personalities, some good, some bad. Over the years, I've seen cats that are friendly, mellow, clever, arrogant, clumsy, surly, completely pea-brained, crafty, and every other personality trait you can imagine. The only problem with cats is that they think they're the masters and we're the pets.

Dogs represent the masculinity in a man. I like both but just happened to have a dog right now. He was a stray hanging around the house, I felt sorry and fed him. He stayed, turned out to be a black lab. Wished I had papers on him but still, I love him dearly, named him Harley Dean.
I didn't realize how quiet my house was before him. And after 1 Oklahoma U hat, 1 Harley Davidson hat, 1 pair of steel toed work boots, 1 pair of $100 running shoes, 1 pair of $90 penny loafers, 1 350 count bed sheet, I still love him.
He'll be 2 in December...thank God! He'll be out of the 'puppy' stage and will mellow.

Dogs are generally more adjusting and loyal than cats. They come to you on being called and do as you like, but cats will do as they like. I believe men see themselves in dogs and equate cats with women. You generally get along much better with your own kind ;-) Women, on the other hand, have loads of patience and can keep up with a cat’s prissiness.

having had at least 2 cats and about 6 dogs, i have found that cats are to independent and so they tend to do whatever they please no matter how many times you try to correct their behavior. they would jump on the kitchen table and i would knock them off but they would come right back and do it again and again. they never seemed to seek human contact, where as dogs are just the opposite, they seek human contact and appreciate it you give it to them. they are easier to train and bring me a lot of joy. i've seen cats at other homes that do the same thing like jumping on the kitchen table, etc..
i don't know that it has anything to do with being a guy.
how about you?

because dogs are subjects and men are kings. Cats on the other hand are the royalty and people are their subjects. Cat attitudes are so different from those of dogs.
I am a cat person, actually! I love my cat and she loves me but she doesn't fawn over me like a dog. She is independent.

Maybe because you have to walk a dog and that gives the men an excuse to get outside away from their wives!

Dogs, especially big dogs are more "Manly" where men probably think cats are too girlish ..
