The answer is really very simple. You tell her the truth. Some people believe there is only one "God". Some people believe there are many "gods". If she asks you to, tell her what you believe or were taught. If she asks you, and you tell her, that you believe in one "God", it would be entirely correct to tell her that not all people were raised or believe as you do. There is no "blasphemy" in that. Its a situation like when children ask where babies come from. You don't launch the whole biological extravaganza to explain. You give what the child needs for their level of sophistication. If they ask more, then you can give more. She is probably questioning you because she wants to know your opinion as well as to corroborate rumors she may have heard from others. Multiple "gods" are a fact of life. And if it is not a fact of YOUR life, its OK to say so.

What a cool kid and what a great question to ask.
In Hinduism there are said to be 330,000,000 gods.
For the many Jews, Christians, and Muslims who argue that they all believe in and worship the same God, their arguments are based largely upon the fact that they all share a common set of religious traditions. They all follow monotheistic faiths which grew out of the monotheistic beliefs that developed among the Hebrew tribes in the deserts of what is now Israel.
They all claim to trace their beliefs back to Abraham, an important figure who is believed by the faithful to have been the first worshipper of God as an exclusive, monotheistic deity.
You could look at Hindu, Christian,Pagan, Muslim, Druid, African.
Good luck.

Answer what you know. The truth religion is fake but is a custom. I was brought up catholic because my mother is catholic. My cousin is Jehovah witness because my aunt is. My GF is a Mormon because her family believe in Joseph Smith....
What do you believe? I know it is hard to get your beliefs straight in order to explain it to a nine year old but what would cause her less confusion? What do you think she will enjoy and relish?
If you believe there is only one god... whatever religion or practice you are accostume to. Answer that. Don't over explain. if she has more questions she will ask them. Just answer what she asks not less not more...
Don't give the lecture of all the religion and the division and the Bible and the messiah. She will ask you if she wants to know. For know just answer her how many gods are there 1 2 3 infinity???

Tell her the truth, since as far back in History as we can go people have believed in many different Gods,or Goddesses and they called them different names. Only with her parents permission should you tell her what you believe in. I don't believe in the same thing my daughter does so I'd never tell her children there was not a God or that if there were he wouldn't be the God that people who go to church or synagogue or mosque talk about! It's not my place to do so!
Besides I wouldn't want to try and explain that although he IS THE SAME GOD, the GOD OF ABRAHAM who all claim to be the ONE GOD, why they kill each other in his name! The question my son asked in his tenth year was why do people who believe in God kill each other?

Okay...What's your question then?
Okay, if you took every deity of every religion and added the numbers together, you would get quite a few thousand.
If you want to answer your grand-daughter's question, you should pretty much know how many gods there are in your religion.

What a wonderful question! Children just amaze me.
I'd say that this would be a wonderful time to talk about the many different religions around the world. You may also want to talk to her parent's first, as you'll want to make sure you're respecting thier beliefs and opinion's regarding this question. They may wish to address it themselves.

Don't say anything you believe. If you are a Christian don't try and force religion into her and say "Oh there is only one God." Children should be brought up to believe what they want to, not to be brought up forced to believe something.
If you can't think of something to say it could be along the lines of: "There's as many God's as you believe."
You should talk to her school, she should be learning Religious Education now, and if she is asking something like that she clearly isn't learning it well.

That would highly depend on the religion or path that you choose to follow, reading up on different religions may help her choose the correct path that she feels is right for her, no one has the right to force anyone into a religion or belief.

It depends on which religion you are thinking about and what you consider a god. For instance I would say that the Roman Catholics have several gods and put idols of them in their churches.
