I don't want to just get rid of them whenever they appear i want to get rid of them once and for all or at least dissapear for a long time.

We use a kind of a chalk in marking our sinks, kitchen tables, etc. We just draw several lines on them and by the next day, a lot of cockroaches can be seen lying dead. We buy these "magic chalk" from grocery stores and I think it is effective.

you may have to call a professional service and have them come around once a month for 2-5 months.....
you can bring the critters in from the grocery store just like mice (bags of potatoes and such)
they are attracted to crumbs, water and dark spaces

Keep the house very clean so you won't feed them. And make liberal use of boric acid.
