The Hippy world brings to mind things like peace and love, flower power; Make love not war! Color and experimentation, together with an exultation of the creative and a fascination with the unknown; a counter culture intrigued with ancient cultural beliefs and practices and the glorification of self-expression. It was a time of experimentation and taking a new look at this old world. What did we miss or discard from the old ways. Let's go back and revisit the past with a new vison for the future. Of course, a drug culture can bring on decadence and sleepiness instead of a new awakening. Those without direction were sometimes destructive instead of creative. Probably the most important element of the hippy world was the element of self-exploration, and seeking out wholeness and the fulfillment of the individual within a structure of social conciousness. Get up from your state of sleep! Awake! Awake from your unconscious state! Who are you? Do you know who you really are? Get out from those boxes; the one box that you live in and you enter another box that takes you to a box where you work and everything is boxes, little boxes and they all seem much the same. The world wasn't ready for the hippy movement and we, the youth didn't really know what we got ourselves into. We lived on communes and we learned to entertain ourselves and each other instead of watching TV. We sang and danced, wrote poetry, and painted. We grew our own food and made our own clothing. We let our hair grow and in general let it all hang out. Sometimes we got into nudity or ran away from conformity only to create our own kind of conformity. We travelled and saw the country or travelled and saw the world or some parts of it. We dabbled in mysticism and a hocus pocus world of wonderment. We opened our hearts and broke our hearts. We laughed with all of our laughter and cried with all of our tears. We explored the concept of, What does it mean to truly be a Human Being.

If you really believe that hippies stood for "never showering, advocating drug use, and being notoriously unemployed," you better think again because you are woefully ignorant. Steve Jobs and Richard Branson were hippies: they are now among the wealthiest men on the planet. Put away those stupid old stereotypes. You'll be glad you did.

The hippies are gone. They could not survive without the atmosphere of the 60's that brought us Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. It was the time when people actually believed that America could change and become a beautiful place where love trumped hate and war. Most of the hippies cut their hair and got jobs on Wall street. The dream turned into corporate America. It was nice while it lasted. Be my "Water Brother?"

being a hippie was never about not showering, being unemployed, nor really even drug use (though many used/tried drugs) it was and still is about freedom, freedom from just accepting what you were told, freedom to view your current life in the concept of life in general, including both historical and global. freedom to use your mind, and accept that your thoughts have as much worth as anyone elses, some may be great thoughts, some negative, and some just mediocre
why would anyone with a working brain just accept that war is ok, spanking children is ok, racism, being force feed ideas and ways to live? etc etc.
many hippies are today very successful, and they still seek success in all areas of their lives, family/spirit/health/and improving the world they live in
being a hippie is a mental state , and yes there are both positive and negative ways of expressing it, in my opinion the positive outweighs the negative by a long shot

well, I am from the Northern California are and some of the hippies like myself aren't what you described above. Remember not all hippies are the same same goes with nerds or geeks; there are many kinds of geeks as well as losers. Hippies are just plain awesome and free-spirited!.
This hippie mom (myself) works, avoids drugs, eats organic/natural foods, sci-fi geek and most importantly I am hippie-geek-mom!

I hate to bring you into the new century - but there aren't any true hippies any longer. At one point when there were "true" hippies in the 60's and early 70's, they represented freedom. Freedom not to be drafted into a bloody war that the U.S. should never have gotten involved in. Freedom to work anywhere no matter what your race or gender. Freedom to re-invent old customs, like not getting married right out of high school to someone who only your parents or church approved of. Freedom to protest government actions you didn't believe in. Unfortunately, some represented the freedom to take drugs thinking it was as safe as drinking alcohol (big mistake for many). But... yes, they were awesome. They spoke up, stood out, and made sure that the young generation of that time was heard.

previous hippies are worse because they have already raised their offspring as dimwitted fools, of their image. Goths what might want to be reported for that loopy bunch of loons. you already know i will ought to end attempting to respond to those. i'm beginning to locate it tougher the further i imagine about them. i'm afraid i'd ought to crew all of them mutually in a unmarried stinking heap. i'm stumped. all of them suck.

I think the hippie's view of the world is sweet, and would be nice if it could ever happen.....but it can't. Earth populated by humans can never be Utopia. I just think some of their views are unrealistic. And it's like, if they can't have the world the way they wish it could be, they just disconnect from it, and that's not productive.

Despite their reputation, they're also very intolerant of anybody who showers, doesn't do drugs and has a job. I've never met a kind hippy. And beyond that, they also believe that they are entitled to everyone else's property and services, despite being willfully jobless. So they contribute nothing to the world and yet believe they deserve everything. That is certainly "bad".
