I've been to several NHL games in my life (close to 1500 to be exact) and EVERY player whines to the ref. EVERY player. I saw Washington play not too long ago and Ovechkin had something to say to the ref on EVERY shift, somebody hit him here, somebody hit him there, etc.
It's all a part of the game.
Personally, if a player didn't whine, I'd be concerned. Doesn't he care?
Keep in mind that Crosby's owner was considered one of the biggest whiners in NHL history, (and before anybody says anything Mario and I are very good friends) but that was just the way the game is played.

I hear a lot of that here around Philly. I ain't on the Sidwagon but I always had a begrudging respect for him which has grown less begrudging and more respectful this last year or so. First by winning the Stanley Cup, then by delivering at crunch time in these Olympics. We Philadelphia area sports fans aren't used to our hockey players delivering when it counts. They do okay during the regular season, getting the fans all worked up, only to choke when players like Crosby, Ovechkin, et al shine. Just watch this seasons' playoffs. Then another offseason of excuses will ensue when a parade is being put together in some other city.

I don't know, but there sure are lot people whining about it. It seems you have to be considered a whiner these days before you can be considered a any good. Whining about whining has become vogue. It seems people think whining about players whining shows a degree of hockey knowledge. As a captain, part of his job is to relay messages/beefs from the bench to the refs. If he is not on the ice, that job goes to an alternate captain. They're supposed to be the only players that talk to the refs, which as we all know is not the case.

I agree with LITY---why wouldn't he want to draw penalties? I don't remember the stat, but Sidney Crosby was up there last season in most penalties drawn. In light of the success of the Pittsburgh Penguins' power-play last season, I don't even care if someone thinks he yaps too much. I doubt he does either.
I don't think he expects special treatment. That sounds like an obvious hole in any person's argument who likes to whine about Crosby whining... If he expected special treatment, why would he be whining?
Who decided to call it "whining" anyway? He's not doing a lot of moaning, I'll tell you that. The guy's passionate and apparently has the mouth of a... hockey player, on the ice. (Friends and I call it the "Read Sid's Lips Game". WARNING: Do NOT play with children around.)
As long as he knows the appropriate time to argue a call, especially a time when he's not going to take any penalties, I don't mind if he has a conniption. He's more likely to lead by example on the ice by displaying his passion than to give a rousing speech in the lockeroom.
Anyway... Hey, if you're going to say that players on other teams say he whines too much, it would help out your case to pass a link along. The only player I know FOR SURE said something to that affect or about diving was Daniel Alfredsson. I read it in a book actually, but I'm sure I could pull up that quote online.
ADD: LOL, why didn't I ever consider saying that it's his facial expressions?? Lord knows he has an abundance of them...

I'm a Habs fan, but when I saw Crosby rough up Kovalev after his hit on Malkin then a whiner was the last thing I thought about when I saw that. The man wants to win and has to lead the Penguins (on some nights by the hand) to win.
Anybody who has a deep desire to win (Lemieux, Gretzky, Roy) were for some reason always considered whiners but I never thought so.

Remember he is still young. I heard him do it more last year but this year is still new. EVERY player in the league complains to the refs to try and get a call go their way. Maybe people thought he should have minded his business and just be thankful he was in the NHL at such a young age. Maybe its his facial expressions that are a bit exaggerated. Great player yes. Whiner.....?? Other players should look at themselves.

Well, everybody does it anyways- and also, the past two years he's been a captain. This year he is THE captain. Ever consider tthat the entire point of having an official captain is somebody to communicate to the refs? yeah, look at the rulebook. the captains are technically the only ones who are allowed to do that. They're supposed to discuss (argue) calls with the refs- that's their JOB. So if he wasn't whining I might say that he's a crappy captain.
Erica: I'll have to try that game sometime...

It has almost become a real part of the game, I think each and every player talks/whines to try and get an advantage. If talking to the ref will get you a favorable call, why not!

No. If you watch the games he takes more cheap shots than the average player, and because he is so strong on his skates, refs seem to ignore many of them.

Everybody says this simply because he draws penalties. He doesn't draw penalties because he whines or dives, he draws penalties because he is so good, he can just keep going even if you nearly knock him over. But if you would see him take a crack at somebody else, I guarantee they would do the same thing, and probably more.
