Because there are too many interests in keeping it as it is. Too much money involved and if you fix it no more money to be made....
A lot of people is just brainwashed and see universal health plan as something close to Communism, or wrong simply because the democrats want it, not realizing that it is common practice in democratic countries like Spain, Italy, France, Norway, Sweden... and the list goes on, countries that get much better health results than the US.
The simple truth is that a universal health system has even more sense than public education, something that curiously the strong opponents of the Universal Health System do not oppose while the arguments in favor or against should really be the same.

Universal health care is probably the most ridiculous idea to hit the America's, ever.
What we need is to change our food industry that is causing disease and shortening our lives like 23 other countries in the world with longevity that exceeds the U.S. A good example of this is to look at your car. If you put bad gasoline and oil in it and dumped some sand in the gas tank each day, what would you suggest to someone that was doing that? Get more mechanics? Create insurance that would pay for the repairs because the car was not running properly? Of course not, you would tell them to put better gasoline in, better oil, and stop putting that sand in the gas tank. Right? Same problem with the food industry. The food industry is the largest industry in the world with gross revenues that exceed all U.S. Corporations combined. This huge amount of money is used to create "programs" and fund agencies designed to protect the public. The problem is "Profit over health."
When you look at what is done with food is to make the foods so it makes more profit and then determine if it is safe. Safe being defined in today's world as does it make you immediately sick or will you die from eating it. What a joke. And the American public let's this happen while disease and death are on the rise in huge proportion.
The medical industry, including drug companies are just doing their job, trying to keep up with all the new diseases arising from this insanity. This increases the cost of health care and in fact, in many cases creates more disease and more doctor induced illnesses. We don't need more mechanics or insurance to pay those mechanics, we need to demand the food industry change.
In 1921, the first case of cardio myfarction was reported. In the early 30's, 3,000 cases. In the early 50's, 500,000 cases. Today, heart disease is killing 3 out of 4 Americans and we are living 30 to 40 years shorter lives because of the food industry; not because we can't find the magic pill to fix it. Diabetes, Autism, Alzheimer's, are just a few diseases that could be fixed by changing the way food is grown and prepared, and mercury and fluoride eliminated from our tables and vaccines. $50 billion dollars were spent on ANTACIDS last year. What sane person would say that our bodies are deficient in drugs? To continue this insanity is to continue to ignore the real problem and make people responsible for their actions. The Merck company was just handed a major defeat for creating Vioxx. This should be happening to more of these companies. In fact, the Merck company should be held responsible for creating AIDS. The 50,000 monkeys they killed, made the polio vaccine, and then distributed it to South Africa, New York, and San Francisco that carried the HIV virus is just incredible. They have not been made responsible for this. The food industry should be held responsible for what they are promoting and the ridiculous food pyramid that was generated should be turned upside down and used for better health. That is a good example of the power of money lobbying.
Just walk down the aisles of any super market today and look at what is offered. Each aisle is like walking down death row. Yet, we continue to beat up the idea of universal health care as the answer. It should be called universal health abuse. We should demand organic foods be produced and the chemical world turned upside down and eliminate all the poisons being dumped onto our foods. Even bees are having problems surviving this insanity.
good luck to us all

Wealthy people have the most political power, and they like the present system, which allows them to choose the best physicians and facilities for themselves.
