If you take the Early Response Pregnancy Test then you can actually test 5 DAYS BEFORE your missed period. Other than that you usually have to wait atleast till you miss your period

No, you should be able to test at 5 days before your period is expected, depending on what test you use. But only about half of pregnant women will actually get a positive this early. So, you could get a false negative.

Best chance for an accurate result is to wait until you are late (or at minimum due for your period). It is also best to use first morning urine (stronger from a hormone point of view).

Early testing is a great way to waste $. The decent tests are still a little pricey.
