We're a family of 4 in the northeast, in a house with a well and pump system. The house was built in '78 and the pump looks old, so I think it might be original equipment. It may have been serviced in '00, but I'm not entirely sure.

I want to know (or referal to a great website) about required maintenance, general life expectance of the pump and if there are any safety concerns, etc.

Our basement flooded last spring and my neighbor said hers flooded, too, and her water came up at the pump...I think ours did, too. What probably happened?

some pumps run for ever, others, who knows, if its working leave it alone, .is it a deep well or a shallow pump with a tank attached ? mine is a deep well has been working for over 5 yrs now, ,if it ain,t broke don,t fix it.
flooding was probably due to ground being over saturated,
with all the rain last summer,
