Depending on the vehicle, and the skill of the person doing the work, it will take somewhere between 4-10 hours to do the job. When the head is off, it is a good idea to have it checked at a machine shop to be sure that it is not cracked or warped. You will have to allow at least a day and most likely several for that to be done.

That depends on what type of vehicle it is and how much damage was done. In most cases the work should take 2-3 days, this extended time table is caused by the need for machine work. When a head gasket is replaced the head MUST be machined to a perfect level surface or it will not mate properly to the gasket/block. Most shops have to send the head out for machine work.
If the vehicle has had a bad head gasket for awhile it could take several more days. Valves may need to be replaced, the engine block may need to be machined (if it got hot enough to warp), etc. Under no circumstances should it take longer than 5-7 business days to complete...that's worst case scenario with valves needing to be replaced, lots of machine work, etc.
Getting the head off a vehicle isn't difficult, reinstalling it and a new gasket isn't difficult either. The inspection of the block and head however can be time consuming. In addition all the coolant and oil must be drained and replaced!
Hope this helps!

The actual labor cost is estimated by the hour. Most head gaskets fall between 4-7 hours of labor. Add to that the time for any additional machining (resurfacing) of the head, which is usually done by an outside facility, you are looking at a couple of days at most.

I've had two cars that needed the head gasket replaced, both took about 2-3 days due to them needing to order the part & having to take a lot of stuff out of the engine compartment to get to it...

Depends on the vehicle. Some have parts more readily available. Some are easier to change.
I've seen some that could be changed in a couple of hours. I've also seen some that were a nightmare to change.

depends on the type of auto and the engine. a straight six in a 69 chevy pick up is easier to change than a 4 cylinder in a 2007 liberty.
