I'm obviously a little bias but I thought Beckett had this in the bag. You're sorta supposed to vote based on the season but you can't ignore what Beckett did in the postseason...he was literally untouchable and beat Sabathia twice and being the AL MVP. I'm surprised he didn't get it and how wide the point spread was. Who do you think should've won?

I'm a Red Sox fan but the voters got this right.

First of all, the postseason doesn't count so you can't let Sabathia's poor showing and Beckett's dominance sway you.

Across the board, their regular season stats are very similar with a slight edge in ERA to Sabathia and a slight edge in strikeout/innings ratio to Beckett. The fundamental difference that sets Sabathia apart is that he pitched 40 more innings than Beckett did. That more than offsets a 1 win difference between the two.

Their regular season numbers were very similar. I'm a Red Sox fan but I have no problem with Sabathia winning the Cy Young.

Actually, you have to ignore what Beckett did in the postseason, because the votes are cast before the playoffs start.

As you pointed out, this was only for the regular season. This isn't about how well Beckett has beat him before. And voting was before the playoffs. But Sabathia had a better ERA with the most games, he had under 40 walks, and more strikeouts than Beckett. Yes it was close but he deserved it more.

How could Beckett have had this "in the bag" when the postseason stats don't count, Sabathia had one less win but far less run support and pitched more games and 40 more innings than Beckett?
Let Sabathia and the Indians enjoy their time in the sun. Boston won the series and ESPN blathered on and on about the Yankees.
CC Sabathia deserved the CYA
Congratulations CC Sabathia.

As a Red Sox fan myself I agree completely with what has been said Sabathia deserved it a bit more th Beckett, Now who knows if Beckett had started all his starts maybe this would have been his year, but who knows. I think he does not care i mean ALCS MVP, a WS ring, a guaranteed contact till 2010 and most likely he is not even reached his peak as far as pitching goes. The only thing the bugs the hell out of me is that 2 of the people who choose who goes on the ballot did not seem to think Beckett was deserving off being put on it at all.

Anyway Congrats to Sabathia

The Cy voting is done prioir to the Post Season so the PS Stats aren't included. Sabathia had a terrific year as did Beckett. Sometimes the Sportswriters of America choose the wrong guy sometimes they don't.

CC was very deserving of this honor. He had the better stats in the regular season. If you were to base it on the entire season, Beckett would have won hands down. I don't believe it would be totally fair to do it like that because you have great pitchers like Scott Kazmir (Tampa Bay Devilrays) who could have 20 wins and never make it to the post season. Besides what is a higher honor than a world series ring?

Of course as a Sox fan I would have loved to have seen Beckett win this, but it's only fair to give it to the better pitcher of the reg. season.

Beckett was more deserving in my opinion but Sabathia had a great year.

they got this one right. Sabathia over Beckett, I also like Braun ove Tulo for NL RoTY . I think they did a good job witht heir selections. There is a rumor though that Greg Maddux has already won a gold glove through 2012.

Well you have to consider that the writers have to send in their votes after the last day of the regular season. Becuase there was a one game playoff, I don't know if that game would've been included for NL awards consideration, but anyway C.C. had electric stuff all year. Beckett really got going in the last few starts. It was a tossup. If the postseason had been included, theres no doubt as to who would've won.
