I'm just like you. I see meanings in songs that are generally more poignant to me than what I find out the song is really about. It really ruins it for me.

What a load of tosh.
Firstly most lyrics don't make sense anyway.
Secondly, all the songs are about "I love you, I worship you, I will never do anything to hurt you, I will love you forever more etc etc"
Are you kidding? Have you seen the divorce rate in the pop business?
Think about the words of Lady in Red.
Beautiful aren't they? Telling his wife how much he loves her - how attractive he finds her - and we know that all the time Chris De Wotsit was banging away at his baby sitter or charlady, whatever!

Yeah, it can. I think songs should be whatever you interpret them to be. One of the things that killed me about "Meet the Parents" was the argument Stiller and De Niro had in the car. The to be son-in-law suggests it's that "Puff the Magic Dragon" was about marijuana, and the to be father-in-law says "What do you mean, it's about a little boy and his dragon?" People have forever been arguing about who "You're so Vain" by Carly Simon is about. My guess is Mick Jagger, but I make it my own by a person I couldn't stand.

I prefer to know the meaning or the story behid a song! Sometimes you can hear words and think what the hell does that mean but then you find out what its about and it all makes sense!

"Fire & Rain" by James Taylor. He was in rehab when a close friend of his was killed in a car accident but he was not told during his time in rehab. Thats why the first line to the song is "just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone" He wrote the song about his friend the day after he got out of rehab. PS good question I love songs with meaning. Another song is "Daniel" by Elton John its about his brother being in a war & losing his eyesight. EJ didn't write it but he sung it well

yes but rather than letting the true meaning of it ruin my ideas and emotions of the song i mould the two together and apply the situation in the song to my life, this makes the experiance much better.

Actually I have, the Foo Fighters "Best of You" track on their live album skin and bones was dedicated to his sister but I always heard it as a track to an ex or something. But I still love it! I just hear it through different ears now.

yes that's why i listen to sigur ros cos the music is beautiful and the singing is in icelandic/a made up language so i'll never know what the songs are about beyond how i respond to them and that makes it the most personal music i've ever heard and consequently the most beautiful.
