I believe the phrase comes from a Leo Tolstoy story, "What men live by."

A wealthy man in the story wants a fine pair of boots that will still look like new a year later. But Michael, a fallen angel living on earth as a tanner, prepares him burial slippers instead -- because the rich man won't even live long enough to come pick up the "boots."

It is not given to man to know when one is going to need burial slippers.

It could mean that man is the only animal that needs to think in order to survive. His survival does not come automatically from instinct or hard-wired survival and food-seeking skills. So, while the method is given to him, it is up to the individual to use it.

said it to "put-down" those who do not know the significance

of their needs; Or do not control them; Or are not concerned

with them.

truth is the most important thing in mintaining peace around the world. just think of it! without truth how can we live peacefully? its given to us by GOD himself to make good decisions and to know the best of his works in our lives and for his word to be given to us . as Jesus says " I am the way the TRUTH and the life no one comes to the father but in me"

i dont think it is a truth, a person must learn what their personal needs are, in order to develop theirselves and reach a feeling of completness
each individuals needs are different, and only they can tell theirselves what is most important to them , who else could know? it takes developing oneself, and looking deep within your inner being to discover your needs,
