I don't think that most people spend their time worrying about becoming depressed or use fake smileys to be perceived as happy.
If they do, they're probably already depressed.
I disagree that depressed people are looked down upon.

i fear it because i have it,thankfully it's not as bad as it has been, but when it's bad i know death could come at any moment
i guess even those who aren't like me and have never had it fear it because they know of how serious it can be and how soul destroying it is for everyone involved when you see life clearly.
fake smiley people, i don't think, would have a fear of depression on their minds, in fact i'm not sure if they have much on their minds and i'm so jealous for their ability not too take things so seriously at all times cos thinking is the worst thing i can do.
i do feel looked down upon tho by "normal" people but i guesss that my state of mind isn't evr that good for me to actually judge other peoples motives correctly

lots of depressed people do the fake smile thing because they don't want to talk about their depression with just anybody. and if you go around with the look on your face that fits the way you feel, then people ask and you have to explain. it could also be that they are in denial about their depression issues. they could also feel guilty about being depressed for "no apparent reason" such as they have a beautiful family that loves them, they live in a nice house, they are Christians, and cognitively thinking, they have "no" reason to be depressed. so they feel guilty about it. especially when they look at what is going on in the world, and all the bad things that could be happening to them but isn't. the perspective issue causes guilt about depression. i don't think it has much to do with what others think... depression is about not being able to get out of your own head.

people don't fear depression. they just have it. my mother has depression and it is not so good. she believes that she is alone but she is not. that she has nothing to do in life, but she has me and my father. i think that depression is something that depends on the character of a person. some people have i some others don't.

i think if people fear depression it is because it sucks the life out of a person and the people around that person
being sad is totally different then depression depression is a disease set up to hide the light in a person

No-it's because who wants to be depressed? It's a terrible state of mind to be in. It causes a lack of interest in everything.
