Philosophically I believe that freedom is in fact just an illusion, since any action must invariably face the consequence and we have no freedom to change the consequence without changing our action. In other words, the inviolable 'cause and effect' syndrome means that there is no real freedom.
Even if we assume that the freedom is to choose a consequence and accordingly work for it, there is this issue of the ever present uncertainty of future and moreover, the inevitability of the complicated interplay of actions by various people which are more often than not at cross purposes with each other....... when the will of a person prevails, the will of many others suffers.

I agree with Annie that the dangerous notion of freedom (in a political context) leads to free market capitalism, where everybody has their rights and the vast majority of people are utterly miserable. Freedom is not an abstraction, however, and it's not very important. Freedom is the freedom to do the things that you want to do, however that is facilitated, and even then, there are freedoms prior to your desires; the freedom to make choices which will lead to genuine fulfilment. A poor kid being brainwashed by advertising and marketing and exposed only to trash culture is not free in that way. My definition of freedom is: something highly overrated.

Freedom has no power without the liberty to live freely. Freedom can be given a spoonful at a time. The freedom we have does us no good if we do not have the liberty to enjoy our freedom as we choose.

to me, freedom is a choice, that is made of your own volition. it means deciding not to go through that red light not because cameras are watching your every move but because you choose to. it means deciding not to steal something off the shelf of a store not because a camera will catch you but because stealing is wrong.
it means the freedom to speak your mind, and to know that your safety will always be preserved no matter what you decide to say,
it means that i will always have a choice to what i decide to read or watch or listen to.
that is what freedom means to me, basically its a choice
lastly, i know that freedom sometimes means i wont be as safe as I could be if everybody was not free, if everyone did not have the above choices and freedom also means having to accept that.
hope that helps.

Being able to "do whatever you want, whenever you want" is more so anarchy than freedom. Freedom within a society is only restricting liberties to the point so that people do not harm one another in one way or another. Sacrificing or limiting particular liberties gives way to all the benefits that society provides.

i believe freedom have controlof its self. freedom is not giving you oportunity to do what you want if it is wrong. it depends to the person giving you permission to do so.
freedom is the thing we always want to have. we want things to be done our way but someone with authority dont just let you do that.
freedom is a hard thing to have.
freedom takes much responsibility. in all actions.
you must not lose your freedom. doing something wrong isn't the right way to do bad things.
most of all freedom is the only thing in the world that can give much joy.

In the political sense it means the freedom from government coercion.
It means upholding individual rights (your right to your own life, liberty and pursuit of your own happiness).
You can't have intellectual freedom without political freedom and you can't have political freedom without economic freedom: free markets/Capitalism.
