Speaking as a frequent science fair judge, I can say that there are several things you need to win a science fair. You need an interesting, original problem, a technique that really is scientific and a presentation that shows that you did a lot of work.
For a problem I would say first, AVOID ANYTHING TO DO WITH HAIR! If you can think it, it has been done...several times. To come up with an original problem, realize that the scientific method is really just a way of solving problems and think about what the problems are around you, other than lack of a good science fair project or a bad hairstyle. Does your dog continually get fleas despite the best treatments? Is the lack of rainfall/wildfires/weird weather in general killing your favorite plants but not the weeds? Perhaps plants are changing in unusual ways? Maybe people around you are coming down with some sort of disease? How about the high price of gas? Could biofuels help? Maybe something from algae so we don't use up all our available land growing fuel?

The next step is to read up and possibly make some observations. Read about fleas in your area or algael biofuels (there is a good yahoo group on biofuels BTW) or plant biology or whatever interests you most and look around you - are the fleas attracted to dog hair? How about dog hair treated with flea repellant? What kind of algae grow well in your area?

After that is the experimentation. I would suggest contacting people at local universities or people with labs. Many are willing to help. Feel free to enlist the aid of your parents here if you are feeling shy. The University websites usually list what their faculty are interested in. If you are lucky, this person will be able to guide you into the right experiments and may even let you use some of the cool stuff in their lab.

Lastly, put some effort into your presentation and use your parents or friends here too. See if you the posters you make explain things to them. Keep a good lab notebook but do not rely on it too much. The judges cannot read every notebook thoroughly. There just isn't time.

Best Wishes and Good Luck,

Doctor Scott

For my science fair project I did senses, We blindfolded 5 subjects for 90 minutes but before we did, we tested all 5 of their senses (we searched the Internet for different ways). We used the exact same tests after 90 minutes to see if there was any differences and there were. It's very simple to do.

look around there it has many projects, 250 to be exact, and you can choose projects by topic to find what your interested in.

Anything that requires growing something or testing something over several days is good because it shows you put time into it and give you a better chance of winning then the old volcanoes and potato clocks.
