There was the one I read on the home page about the Cassini-___ probe sending some "alien"-sounds back to Earth as it orbits... was it Saturn? This is an exploring space story.
Then there were all the retired pilots and military and such telling their tales of seeing UFOs at a recent gathering for that purpose... which was of course debunked by the people 'in charge' now--"They are called UFOs because we don't talk to them and they don't talk to us. All they are is UFOs, ordinary unidentified flying objects, not aliens."
Then came the replies that what those first men, the pilots etc. saw (including ex-pres. Jimmy Carter) were most certainly not "just" UFOs; they were too fast, too big, too bright, too many... too 'something' to be from this planet.
I guess this part is a reverse 'exploring space story.'
And I have no idea if this is the sort of thing your question is referring to. (?)

Try any of several early books from Robert Heinlein.
"The Menace from Earth"
"Have Spacesuit Will Travel"
come to mind. They might have fantasy elements, but his attention to realistically portraying the physical aspects of space travel made the works really ring true.
