He is following military protocol. When he laid the wreath,he was honoring war dead.William would salute all military officials and they would salute back. The Queen,Prince Philip,Prince Charles and Prince Andrew are higher ranked than William. The Queen,as monarch,is head of all the military branches.Philip and Andrew are war veterans, and Charles is a veteran of 20-years worth of service. The Prince of Wales last assignment was a Commander of the HMS Bronington, a mine-sweeper;he was also a Marine and Helicopter pilot. Charles served in all branches of the military because one day he will be Commander-and Chief of all of them.Anne,The Princess Royal holds a number of appointments in the British and Commonwealth Armed Services:

When a soldier,sailor,marine,airforceman/woman salutes another service person,he or she is simply following military protocol(a form of etiquette) that shows recognition to another service person.William would salute fellow service people, family members who served included, and they would salute him.

Although he is second in line to the British Throne, his father and grandmother are much higher in rank than he is, and the lower ranks must salute those higher than them (whilst in uniform)....regardless of who they are...and quite honestly, you don't get a much higher rank in this country than being the King or Queen.

Prince WIlliam, and all those who laid wreaths saluted out of respect for those brave men and women who gave their lives in combat.

He salutes his dad and grandmother as they are higher rank then him, he also salutes those above him in rank. In uniform he should also salute the Duke of York and Princess Royal (if they are also in uniform).

Also when he was at Sandhurst he addressed his trainers as "Sir" but due to his status as direct heir to throne they also addressed him as "Sir".

It has to do with military rank and respect, and it has nothing to do with where he stands in the line or royal succession.

Tradition, tradition, tradition.
