every surgery poses a risk, but cesareans are very common. Usually they are performed in order to prevent health risks to the mother and/or child.

Its spelled cesarean hon, and yes, like any operation there are always risks. I had one with my first child (a son) 17 yrs ago. My team of Doctors rotated during my visits. The one on call at the time of birth happened to be the best of the team (a nurse told me) to perform this kind of surgery. Some doctors are known for leaving ugly scars and cutting jaggedly.(Not trying to be gruesome). I have a bikini cut which doesn't show readily.
I consider myself blessed, because my son was in breach (feet first) and that could be potentially more dangerous for the baby as well as the mom in regards to pain. One benefit is, you bypass the labor pains, and the downside is, you have to recover from surgery. Postpartum depression can be a factor as well. I have no regrets, and my daughter came 3 yrs later (natural!) I prefer natural though, that's the way God planned it to happen.

All operations do have some risk but I had to have an emergency c-section after 15 hours of labour and I was SO glad the doctor was quick-witted enough to whisk me in there and get the baby out; he saved my daughter's life. It is quite a big operation in terms of tummy muscles healing though so I would recommend getting the required amount of rest afterwards and accepting any help after it!

One risk is lessened if you are able to have a spinal block instead of a general anaesthetic as that obviously has its own risks.

As has been said, there is some danger as it is surgery. I suppose it's just as safe as vaginal child birth.

I'm assuming that Gilly was saying that a C-section is natural childbirth. It is not. In a C-section, an incision is made in the abdomen to extract the baby. Natural childbirth is vaginal. Although, I don't quite consider all vaginal births fully natural. My labor for my daughter was induced in a hospital. Ideally, I wanted labor to start on its own and to have either a water home birth or a water birth at a midwife center. At the beginning of my pregnancy, I knew that a home birth was not an option, as I already knew we'd be moving during my eighth month. However, I was just thankful that I was able to have it as natural as possible.

Anything that is done surgically can be dangerous...any time that someone has their body cut into can be dangerous...
Usually it isn't...C sections have been pretty much mastered because they are done frequently and have been for many years.
The risk of infection after the procedure is probably the greatest risk.

A C-section, while very common these days, is a major abdominal surgery that definitely has it's risks. You must consider a lot of factors, including any reactions to previous anesthesia, etc...

The recovery time is definitely longer than a vaginal delivery. I'm glad we have C-sections for emergencies, but after seeing one in person (I'm a nursing student), I really hope I never have to have one.

All surgeries carry risks. I won't say that a c/section is dangerous, but I will say that it's to be done only in an emergency situation, such as when the baby and/or mom are in distress.

The patient and baby are very closely monitored, and most of the time, the surgery is a success. I have had two myself, and thanks to them, my babies were born alive. :)

It is a little more dangerous than a normal delivery, but mostly because of the increased risk of infection. The recovery time is longer too. But I am assuming you DR thinks that the safety for you and your child outweighs the risks, and isnt just delivering your child that way so he won't miss his vacation or a golf date..LOL
