Difficult, it would be easy to say Pele...but I am suprised that nobody, especially SMARTY, mentioned Ferenc Puskas from Hungary! He was the most prolific goalscorer of all time, even better strike rate than Pele, and as Smarty mentions, Pele played largely alongside the best in the world, which helps, Puskas did not always!!

But it is really impossible to answer this question, the best player ever.....it would be easierto say the best player of each era, as football has, and still is changing all the time, so who knows how well Pele and Puskas would do now, or Greaves, Cruyff, etc. I think well, but no-one knows for sure!

This is probably the most asked question on Yahoo Answers.

Anybody who knows anything about football will always give the same answer .... that is Pele.

His record throughout his entire career is not just great, it's astonishing. People argue that he didn't play against good players but Brazil had most of the worlds top players in the 50's & 60's so that puts that arguement to bed.

The other thing that people don't realise is that Pele and his Santos team would usually play 3 games a week (think of the uproar from Wenger if that happened today)

They once did a European tour and played 13 games in 19 days, Pele played in 10 of them ...... That's what I call a football pro!!!

I haven't mentioned his 1080 goals yet but I guess that speaks for itself.

There have been other greats (Di Stefano, Moore, Cruyff, Greaves, Van Basten, Maradona, Muller etc etc)

But ... there'll only ever be one Pele

this is a subjective question. Many players have great qualities so its hard to say which is really the best. Pele is considered great because he recieved a lot of attention but so did Beckham and people were dissappointed with him in LA. As he said though "I'm not known for scoring." He is better for setting his teammates up and crossing the ball well.
