Why have cats been considered evil by some cultures, past and present?

they were seen as witches' familiars. it looks like the middle and dark ages were the only time cats were seen as bad, evil, or pests. they were dead wrong because the plague got stronger after the cat killings.
but egyptians worshipped them because they protected the grain from rodents.

According to the ancient Egyptians they were considered the keepers of the dead. They had a cat Goddess "Bastet"
