Not 'successful', no.

Enfield used to sell diesel versions of the Bullet, with engines between 325cc and 850cc. You probably won't see many on the road, though.

Kawasaki offer a diesel version of the KL-650 for military use.

The best potential is from Neander in Germany. Their crusier-styled bike uses a 1,400cc turbo-charged diesel that kicks out 100bhp and looks awesome (but then it should do, for £50,000...).

Diesel I dont know, but the army did design a multi fuel bike about 3 years back. It was supposed to run on pretty much anything..diesel,gas,jp8...whatever the military had around.

Hi Stephen.

I am a bit of a bike person, but have yet to come across a truly successful deisel one.

BMW tried it, so did Royal Enfeild & BSA, but to no avail.

Trouble being that by necessity, the engine is too heavy for small vehicles.

As a laugh, early pioneers of powered flight tried deisel engines, but fell foul of the fact that the weight outweighed lift. Disasters !

My old 15 ton narrowboat and "hippy" 7 ton truck have deisel engines, as the extra mass is not a problem.

So power to weight ratios are applicable.
I would love to see a new deisel-engined bike, but it just don't work.

Royal Enfield in India, who have numerous agents in the UK, do one and others use their machines for this purpose. Performance? well, usually about 10bhp and 170 to the gallon!
