Should it be more religious,
instead of the rampant consumerism that is encouraged by the shops?

Yes. The past couple of years I have not enjoyed Christmas much and I realized that after being beat over the head by stores with the idea that I have to buy for Christmas beginning in September, I was tired of the day when it finally arrived.

I try to contain Christmas to its season. I put up the tree the day after Thanksgiving. I volunteer at a Santa's House. I try to avoid the commercial Christmas crap in the stores. And I try to finish my present buying by December 1st. That way I am not drawn into the purchasing frenzy.

It gets harder every year because the momentum of Commercial Christmas Cashing-In begins earlier and gets more and more demanding of one's attention. But Christmas should be small, personal, and therefore special.

I absolutely think it's far too commercialised. I dont think that kids appreciate the value of money anymore anyway, and the computer games etc they are now demanding costing so much more than the presents we as kids accepted, there's just no end in sight as far as I can see. BUT I have a really good way of looking at christmas nowadays. In relation to presents etc For the adults i.e. friends neighbours etc I think the 'presents' thing is totally outrageous
.
My own theory on this and I hope that eventually everyone will think this way, is to ...
Imagine all the stress and hassles that could be got rid of if we all did this, ok?
Unsure if how I explain this will be obvious but here's hoping the penny drops....!!!
With the money that we all spend on pressies for those people we buy for, and not forgetting all the hassle in progress as we are worrying just what to get, and the fact that what we do get may just be accepted with a halfhearted 'Oh thank u' ; Just try and imagine how much easier and less stressful it would be if we all took the money we WOULD have spent, and bought OURSELVES something that we REALLY WANTED, something we wouldnt necessarily have gone out and bought with our everyday budget. Let's call it "A little extravagance well deserved". ha ha!!
That way, we would ALL have something we really wanted and we could tell ourselves that it was from ALL the people who would have gone out and hassled and spent on stuff we dont really want.
Now, dont you think thats a better ideal all round?

Oh God yes!! I love, love, love xmas but hate that it starts about the same time your sunburn fades! Kids these days don't understand about being naughty or nice they just whine and moan and their parents will buy them whatever the hell they like. Xmas is beginning to lose all meaning and I for one am very sad. By the time I have kids they won't even know why we celebrate it.
More schools should teach the xmas story and try to instill in kids now that you can't always have what you want and giving is just as good as receiving before it's too late. But that's just my view :)

Yes. I enjoy the Christmas decorations and the carol singers.
But you just need to read some of the questions posted by people on yahoo about Christmas to see how much pressure it puts on people financially. Its nice to give and receive but a small inexpensive gift with some thought behind it is far nicer.

No I am not fed up with Christmas being commercial...mostly because I don't participate in commercial christmas.

Rather I do my other things. Get together with friends and make christmas decorations rather than buy them, I used to make my own christmas cards. One christmas was spent with children (most with disabilities) in an orphanage in northern China.

So I am not fed up with the universiality of Christmas, rather I make it my own. One of my favourite gifts I have seen from Christmas comes from Northern China. They give apples. It is a word play, the chinese word for peace and the word for apples sound similar, so they give the gift of peace.

The idea of giving has eclipsed the meaning behind giving. People talk about how much joy they receive when people open their presents, but if you give to charity, surely that would be better. Is it because people want to get their money's worth by giving each other presents and judging their reactions. If it's lukewarm, do they think they've wasted their money? It should be more religious.

Christmas is a very special time - just don't let anybody else tell you what it should be! Hard, know, but enjoy what you enjoy and leave the rest! Christmas carols, hugs, lights, CANDY!, and lots of warm fuzzies! And remember the reason for the season. And if you don't agree, at least be mature enough to allow those of us who do our rights to enjoy as we choose. Be blessed!

Thanksgiving, hasn't gotten here yet. But you would believe it is come and gone. Jesus, was born. Not the shopping malls. I freely admit, that I do not go to church. But I am a good Christan.
