I am running Windows XP on my PC. My DVD writer has given up the ghost and I want to permanently disable it. I disabled it and then uninstalled it in Device Manager. However, whenever my machine is turned back on, Hardware Wizard finds it and reinstalls. How can I stop this?

Don't uninstall it, just disable it.
OR...
You could go into the BIOS Setup (press F1 or similar at bootup), find Hardware > IDE controllers and disable the secondary controller(this is usually the DVD). Save setting and reboot.
An easier way might be to shut down, open the PC case and disconnect the Data cable from the DVD drive, it will no longer be detected by the PC.

You either have to go internally and unhook it (remove it) or you have to go to the Startup Manager and disable it so that it doesn't look for it each time you restart.
If it isn't marked as disabled, then the startup manager will reinstall it each time because it sees it as "new" hardware.

Shutdown your computer, then open it up and unplug the DVD writer you want to disable.
