I feel for your loss
Maybe it was self defense, maybe not
The best thing to do is let go of the anger
All the anger will do is tear you up inside and may cause you to do something really stupid, like kill the guy that did this, which will give you 20 to life.
Peace
Jim

I am sorry for your loss; regardless of the circumstances, it is the worst thing in the world to lose a child.
I would advise against continuing on with a legal battle. It may well have been self defense and the last thing you need to do is view your lost child in a negative light. Plus nothing anyone says or does will bring you child back.
Think of all the positive things your 21 year old accomplished and celebrate their life.
I lost a 16 year old last month, it is not easy, never will be.

I am so sorry for your loss. The man responsible may still be found civilly liable - a good example is Fred Goldman (father of Ron) who sued O.J. for civil damages and won. Of course, as you know, O.J. was acquitted at the criminal trial but he still owes the Goldman family and I think the Brown family, as well, millions of dollars.
Collecting on any judgment is another issue. Consult an attorney for more information and a grief counselor to deal with your loss.

Double jepoardy laws prohibit a person from facing a criminal cause of action that they have already been aquitted of (You can't be tried again for the same offense once a judgement has been entered).
You options at this point are to appeal the court's decision to the 9th circuit court of appeals, or have the individual tried in civil court to assign monetary damages by means of a wrongful death claim.
If you appeal to the 9th circuit and it fails, your last option is to appeal to the supreme court. After that, you have no options.
Of course, I'm assuming that you live in the USA. If you do not, then this information is useless to you.

Something similar happened here in Florida when a teenage prankster was going to knock the door and run off as a game and the man shot him. He was very young..the victim..and the shooter got off because he claimed he was afraid for his life. Don't take revenge in your own hands even as tempting as it is.

You will carry on you are a strong person. hang in there, I cannot imagine how you must feel. anger and extreme grief ... You cannot cope alone, if you do not belong to a church, join a support group or both. But do not worry, what goes around comes around. Life will take its revenge on your son's killer. God bless you and your family. Be strong!

losing a child would have to be the most horrifying thing i can of..... and i am so sorry. but you have to do 2 things. you have to be honest with yourself about what really happened..and although your heart says it was not self defense..what do the facts show. second you have to love and remember your child... for all the joy he or she brought to your life... and let GOD have him or her now. pray for peace of mind...and do things to help other young men and women from from becoming victims. if this man is truly lying let his fate be that of a higher power (not the courts) and not yourself. remember we reap what we sow. my prayers are with you.
