Not as great as the chances of miscarrying if you have an STD or other infection that goes untreated. Many women get pap smears in early pregnancy, and there is no increased risk of miscarriage in an otherwise healthy pregnancy.

I've always had pap smears in early pregnancy. Not pleasant, but definitely important if it's been a while since you never want to risk an infection while expecting. If you are healthy the procedure is minimally invasive and will not put you at risk for miscarriage. Did your cousin have a pre-existing condition? If not, her miscarriage was "just one of those things" and not related to the smear.

I had a pap in the beginning of both my pregnancy. They do it even if you arent having any symptoms just to make sure you dont have any infections or STD's. If you have a greenish discharge, you prob. have some sort of infection or STD, and you have a better chance of miscarriage with that then a pap. I dont think a pap caused your cousin to miscarry. ive never heard anything like that. Everytime I had them while pregnant, the dr. said i might spot a bit because your cervix is more irritated while pregnant, but never heard of miscarriage because of it.

There are generally no problems with doing pap smears while pregnant. Actually it is very common for them to do one when you find out you are pregnant to make sure that you do not have any problems with your cervix that could prohibit you from having a vaginal birth, they do this so that you will not damage anything if you do have something wrong. Try not to worry all should be fine. Good luck.

Not to worry, you're better off making sure your uterus is in healthy working order before your baby gets bigger. I'm 37wks preggers and have had 4 pap smears since I started to see the doctor, turns out I had a severe bladder infection and a UTI. Better safe than sorry.

Frequency shouldn't really be an issue... do it as often as the two of you feel like getting at it. At 8 weeks I don't think you'd really have to worry about position either, but maybe you should let her top just to be on the safe side. Or you two could just do oral.
