I purchased a manual pump, then while my daughter was in the hospital having surgery (at 10 days old) I used their electric pump and fell in love. It took half the time to get twice the milk. I would highly recomend an electric if you will be doing it frequently. But for a bottle or 2 a week, I would say a manual should do the trick.

It is much better than a manual but not as great as your baby nursing from you. The electric is easier on the hands (no more cramped fingers!) and works much faster than the manual. If you get a dual electric, you'll be done within half an hour. However, some women do not do well with a pump at all. I could hardly get out a full ounce when I tried. They are expensive, but well worth it if you need to pump often (are you a working mother?). Medela has been a trusted brand, but I also liked Ameda Purely Yours, which is just as efficient and half the price. It also has a closed system, which means the milk never backs up into the motor, breeding bacteria.

An electric pump is more effective than a hand pump (especially if it is a double-electric), however no pump is as effective as a nursing baby. The best way to increase supply (if that is your goal) is to nurse as often as possible. And, if your baby sleeps longer periods at night, you may wish to pump then (both to increase supply, and build a freezer stash).

If you need to pump with any regularity (going back to work, for example), I highly recommend you purchase a double-electric breast pump. I would recommend, in this order:
1. Ameda Purely Yours/Lansinoh double-electric (same thing, different name/packaging)
2. Medela PISA
3. Medela PIS

The Purely yours is a very good pump, and much more affordable than the medela pumps ($150, vs $250-$300).

the acceptable pump agencies are Medela, Ameda, and Hygeia. Lansinoh additionally makes a physically powerful double pump. once you purchase a pump, examine the warrantee. If the pump is warranteed for a twelve months, that's how long you are able to anticipate it to final. some are warranteed for only 3 months. whilst finding out to purchase a pump, evaluate that it rather is saving you very much of money in the cost of formula and greater well being care expert's visits. in case you're on the cheap, you should to lease a Medela Lactina. it rather is an magnificent pump, and if there are any problems you only swap it out for a clean one.

Can I ask why you do this?

If you absolutely have to pump your milk and its something you are going to do on a long term basis I would switch to the electric one as it is usually quicker and better than hand pumping. It can be a little harsher on your breasts I found.

well there are many types of breast pumps, cheaper one and more expensive ones. i prefer the medela it is very expensive but very gentle on your breasts, i have tried gerber breast pump and it really hurt, they work better than the manual ones and are quicker but you do have to be careful with any pump cause if it is on too high of a setting it will hurt.
