When you are pregnant, you don't get a true "period", because for a real period to happen, you have to have ovulated, which you don't when pregnant.
But you can have bleeding that resembles a period, that would be timed around the time your period would be due. It could be light or heavy. There is a wide variety of normal, but any bleeding should always be reported to the doctor, so it's good she mentioned it.
Tell her not to worry and to trust her doctor.

Technically speaking the doctor is wrong in the terminology he used. Pregnant women do NOT have periods. You can only get a period if you are ovulating, and of course, pregnant women don't ovulate.
However, women do commonly experience pregnancy-related bleeding, most often in the first trimester, and it can be due to any number of things. The bleeding will not be heavy and regular like a normal period.
The vast majority have no complications and deliver healthy babies.

Yep - had a small period after I'd missed the first. Seven months later - perfect baby boy - tell her not to worry

Some women experience periods throughout pregnancy.
I didn't however but if her doctor isn't concerned then just wait for next weeks scan.

The same thing has just happened to my wife yesterday and this morning. We are both very worried, but looking at the answers we are really comforted that it might not be a disaster after all. Going to the hospital on Friday - our fingers and toes are crossed...
